But Jaco Beach isn't just a beautiful spot to soak up the sun; it's also a great base for exploring some of the amazing attractions nearby. If you're a nature lover, be sure to visit Manuel Antonio National Park, just a short drive down the coast. This pristine nature reserve is home to an abundance of exotic wildlife, including monkeys, sloths, and a dazzling array of birds and reptiles. Whether you choose to hike through the park's lush jungles or relax on one of its tranquil beaches, Manuel Antonio is an experience you won't forget.

For those seeking more adventure, there are plenty of activities available in the area. You can book a zip-lining tour to soar through the canopy of the rainforest, go horseback riding through the mountains, or try your hand at deep-sea fishing. And of course, Jaco Beach is renowned as one of the best surfing spots in the world, with waves that will challenge even the most seasoned surfer.

At the end of a long day exploring the nearby attractions, you can return to Jaco Beach and unwind with a cocktail on the sand as the sun sets over the Pacific Ocean. Surfing

Surfing is a must-do activity in Jaco; this beach is known to have some of the most beginner-friendly waves, so it would be a shame to miss out on taking a lesson or joining a camp. Prices for 2-hour sessions tend to start at $50 per person, and there are plenty of surf shops to choose from; some of the most popular are School of the World, Surfer Factory, Selina, Tortuga, and Jaco Surf School. For novices, Madrigales on the southern end of the beach is the place to be; while the middle and northern parts are better suited to more experienced surfers.

Waterfall Tours

Just outside of Jaco, Costa Rica lies a verdant mountain range that serves as the habitat for many rivers and waterfalls. A few years ago, we booked a Jaco waterfall tour with Costa Rica Waterfall Tours (found in Jaco Walk). On this excursion, we were able to hike through the stunning rainforest, dive into the falls, and enjoy swimming in the pristine pools!

For those looking for more waterfalls, there's Bijagual, about 20 minutes from Jaco. This particular waterfall requires an entry fee of $20, and an approximately one hour trek. An alternate way to reach Bijagual is via horseback riding tour, which provides an incredible experience. Without a doubt, these Jaco waterfalls are an absolute must-see!

Miro Mountain

Head to Miro Mountain for an amazing viewpoint of Jaco. It’s an abandoned building a little bit outside the south end of Jaco up in the mountains. They have closed the road so you can’t drive up there anymore however. You will have to park your car and hike up.

It’s a gorgeous view but quite a bit of a steep hike so not recommended for anyone who cannot walk for long periods of time or have trouble walking on non-groomed steep paths.

Viewpoint from Miro Mountain

The entrance to this viewpoint is across from the southern most road off the highway to Jaco. The parking lot is very small so try to go early to avoid the crowds as it gets popular, especially during sunset and weekends. Don’t leave valuables in the car, roll up your windows and lock your door if you park.

Bird Watching

Located at the commencement of the tropical rainforest, Jaco boasts an abundant array of wildlife, much more diverse than the North Pacific. Ornithologists from around the globe travel to Jaco in pursuit of some of the most interesting bird species in Costa Rica. Species including toucans, birds of prey and the Scarlet Macaw can be spotted. Carara National Park has the most expansive Scarlet Macaw breeding area, their population having drastically decreased years prior due to the mass deforestation and hunting.

Deep Sea Fishing

Although Jaco itself doesn’t have good fishing, all you have to do is head over to Herradura beach and you can go deep sea fishing. Herradura is home to Los Suenos Marina, a luxury resort and marina in Costa Rica.

Fishermen can fulfill their dream of catching a marlin, roosterfish, sailfish or tuna. Herradura is one of the best places to go fishing in Costa Rica.
